Full Truckload (FTL)
Full Truckload (FTL) refers to a service where the entirety of a trailer is taken up by one shipment. The truck leaves the loading door, journeys to the delivery and unloads the goods at the destination. FTL often tends to be the cheapest route and usually the fastest.
Less-Than-Truckload (LTL)
Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) refers to a service where only a portion of a trailer may be needed. The truck is available to carry more than one shipment. For smaller shipments LTL tends to be cheaper, however, depending on the deliveries before it. It can potentially take longer than FTL.
Partial Direct (Dedicated)
Partial Direct or (Dedicated) Freight is the mixture of both FTL and LTL. The shipment may fall into the "LTL" category, however, the shipper or customer may need the shipment in a timely fashion. By sending the shipment LTL, there are other stops along the way that can push back your delivery. Partial Direct Freight has a dedicated trailer, even if it doesn't take up the whole thing. Therefore the shipment is treated as FTL, but, this tends to be the more expensive option due to the amount of open trailer that could've been used for other LTL shipments.
